I wasn’t going to post this because it’s pretty lame, but since I’d already written it I thought, eh, why not?

So to follow in the ways of several beloved people in my life I, too, have decided to write a poem for you all this holiday season. However, unlike the witty Christmas poetry I’ve received, my lengthy poem is an ode to the year in passing (and our daily CO life) as well as the New Year. So here goes.

Isn’t it crazy what a year 2009 has been?
It’s gone by so quickly, now a new year again.
I can only imagine what will happen for us this year,
Seeing as now we’re in Golden, enjoying Coors beer!

You all know the story of my exciting 25th year journey,
But if you missed the details, read this and you’ll be learning.
So if you want to know more about our CO routine,
Read on, my friends, there’s information to glean.

While our weekdays are boring, our weekends are hopping,
We like to explore around town and sometimes go shopping.
We’ve had quite a few adventures already, I’ll say,
But there are people back home we do miss every day.

Yet overall it’s been easy to adjust to our new life,
And we’re excited that we haven’t had too much strife.
Just a few quibbles about small things now and then,
But nothing to cause a controlled count to ten.

I mean a move doesn’t change all things, I really don’t think,
I still delay washing my dishes, causing them to rot in the sink.
However, it’s not just me who gets all the small scowls,
I get annoyed when Ryan plays his PlayStation for hours.

But thankfully we don’t tire of being together all day –
It’s really nice to have lunch dates and then go our own way.
Downstairs in the cold dining area is where my office resides,
While Ryan gets the good chair,* not to mention the heat rise.

I say this in good fun, because we all certainly know he deserves it,
He’s bringing in the money while I’m trying to find a good job fit.
And hopefully I will find something soon – wish me some luck,
So I can again contribute and bring in a few extra bucks.

After work we enjoy our evenings together watching good flicks,
While eating lots of junk food like ice cream and platefuls of chips.
But our dog always disturbs our warm relaxation on the couch,
By circling around by the door and preparing to crouch.

So we make each other take turns letting her out in the cold,
Only to return to the other with the blanket in a very firm hold.
Then there is usually a small fight and a resistance to share,
For it’s hard to cover two gangly bodies without letting in cold air.

Speaking of which, I really should mention the temperature here,
It’s totally different than winter in Chicago or the at Grand Haven pier.
No crazy cold wind blowing and chilling us right down to the bone,
Since it’s been oddly cold, people say we’ve brought our weather from home.

But we think it’s fine and thoroughly enjoy our winter weekend excursions,
And we look forward to more great weather – so far we have no aversions!
We’re always greeted with sunshine when we wake up each morning,
And even in winter, a 60-degree day will come without warning.

Anyway, after five days of working, running errands and job hunting,
We’re off to explore our new area and discover all kinds of fun things.
So far we’ve stayed local and haven’t spent too much money,
But soon we will ski in the mountains and hope that it’s still sunny!

We’ve gone downtown Denver to go shopping at 16th street mall,
We also went one evening to see the Denver Zoo lights and all,
What a great time we’ve been having just checking it all out,
And it’s only been 6 weeks since we’ve been here, out and about.

Once spring comes around we’ll have even more to do,
Such as Buffalo Bill’s gravesite and visiting Durango, too.
Also, Dinosaur Ridge with tracks to encounter and trails to hike,
And going back to Red Rocks Amphitheatre – driving there on our bike.

There are many rocks to climb and more pathways for walking,
However I’m sure I’ll still do quite a bit of Facebook stalking.
It’s definitely different being away from family and friends,
But I like to keep my focus on the good change that happens.

So our first weeks here have been fun and hopefully it will only get better,
I’m still hoping Ryan will let me buy Sadie one more winter sweater.
We’ve started meeting fun new people and are making some friends,
And now we’ll have company in our adventures on the weekends!

All in all it’s been a great year, and it’s going to be hard to top,
But I’m sure 2010 will not hold out and will give all it’s got.
At least that’s what I’m hoping because we’re ready for more,
We can’t wait to see what the New Year has in store!

Yeah, it’s long and I applaud your effort if you made it all the way through, haha. In any case, I had fun writing it!

Cheers,
Laura

(*scratch that – Ryan got me a new office chair for Christmas!)
